My doctor said I need to eat more as my muscles are getting weaker. But I heard there is \u201cgood\u201d and \u201cbad\u201d protein but I don\u2019t know which is which\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"f741\">Protein is important for muscle maintenance and to prevent muscle loss, which can be a common issue as we get older.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"438a\">I hadn\u2019t heard of \u201cgood\u201d and \u201cbad\u201d protein. But proteins can be ranked by \u201cquality\u201d. Proteins are made of amino acids. The more amino acids the protein has, the higher it will be ranked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"7452\">There are no \u201cbad\u201d proteins only proteins with more or less amino acids than the other. Like a bouquet of flowers, a big bouquet is great but a small bouquet is just as welcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"d7c6\"><strong>So here are 3 tips about the types of protein you can eat and what to add to your basket:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"0117\">1. Animal proteins are a \u201ccomplete\u201d protein<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"dbdb\"><strong>Shopping basket: Chicken, eggs, fish<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"59b7\">\u201cComplete\u201d proteins contain all 9 essential amino acids. They are called \u201cessential\u201d as they body cannot make them, so you have to get it from your diet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"5e1c\">For a meal idea try this salad: sliced boiled&nbsp;<strong>eggs<\/strong>, diced&nbsp;<strong>chicken<\/strong>, sunflower and pumpkin seeds and lettuce with a vinaigrette.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"3ce6\">2. Plant proteins on their own don\u2019t have all the essential amino acids.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"d1d6\"><strong>Shopping basket: beans, broccoli, peas<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"f9d1\">But if you eat a variety of plant proteins you can get all the essential amino acids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"89f8\">So to make your \u201ccomplete\u201d protein bouquet you could eat: Beans + grain + 2 vegetables e.g. Sugar&nbsp;<strong>bean<\/strong>&nbsp;stew with brown rice, butternut squash and&nbsp;<strong>peas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"fed9\">3. Soy is an exception \u2014 it is a plant based protein with all 9 essential amino acids.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"7e11\"><strong>Shopping basket: Tofu, Edamame, soy milk<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"3df6\">Tofu (made from soybeans) is suitable for vegans and is a \u201ccomplete\u201d protein.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ec44\">Crispy&nbsp;<strong>Tofu<\/strong>&nbsp;served with wholewheat noodles, braised aubergines and pak choi is a tasty way to eat your protein.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"d72f\">Fill your shopping basket with a variety of protein foods to get all the essential amino acids.
