It’s a sunny day and you are feeling the sun on your skin, but is it enough to get Vitamin D?
You can get Vitamin D from sunlight but it depends
In the UK you can get vitamin D from sun light if:
- It is shining directly on your skin so you have to be outside
- You are not wearing sunscreen
- The month is April to September in the UK
So the answer is no, you can’t get vitamin D from sunshine if you are sitting inside by the window on a sunny day.
Why can’t I get vitamin D sitting indoors on a sunny day by the window?
Light from the sun is made up of Ultra Violet A (UVA) and Ultra Violet B (UVB) rays. UVB light shining directly on your skin can make vitamin D in your body.
Windows block UVB light and so your body can’t make vitamin D when you are sitting by the window in your house.
Windows block UVB light, the light that can help your body make vitamin D, so you can’t get vitamin D from sunshine sitting indoors by a window.
